Craftsmen Specialty Coffee – Siglap V

19/5/2014 – Craftsmen Specialty Coffee is now open!

Yes! After a temporary closure due to staff training, Craftsmen Specialty Coffee, which specializes in coffee and cakes, had a reopening just few days ago.

Besides from the food options, they also have appliances for sale here.

Dutch Colony Coffee Co.’s blends are used here. The Flat White ($4.50) tasted strong and firm, yet has a low acidity that everyone can enjoy.
DSCF2791Flat White

The bakes and pastries here are supplied by online bakery Fathiscakes and Bonheur Pattiserie. The Salted Caramel Popcorn ($8.90), one of the cakes baked by Fathiscakes, is firm and satisfying. The caramel taste is just right; flavourful and not too sweet. Add a pinch of salt with popcorns on every mouthful and this will became a delightful cake to have.

The location also meant that it is a quiet respite for people to relax with a cup of coffee or to study in during the day. With its reopening, the Siglap / East Coast area has now yet another cafe to be added to its list.

The BelGaufre – PoMo

10/5/2014 – PoMo has had numerous change of tenants for the past few years. With Kaplan recently occupying the higher levels of PoMo, the latter has also went through another round of tenant changes. It now offers more F&B choices instead. The BelGaufre is one of the food stalls that resulted from this change.

There are different type of waffles to choose from, from the savoury wafflewiches to the sweet and fruity waffles, from liege waffles to brussels waffles.

The Signature Custard & Roasted Almond ($3.80) waffles came in the liege variant. The custard was rather soft and goes really well with the roasted almond. The liege waffle here is similar to the original methods; it tasted rather similar to bread, is filling and chewy.
DSCF2723Signature Custard & Roasted Almond

The Banana Rumba ($4.50) is one of the chef recommendation. This waffle, made Brussels style, came with lots of sliced bananas and roasted almond and covered with chocolate sauce is a must have. The Brussels waffle is soft and light, allowing the bananas and almond to unleash its full taste. The downside about the Brussels waffle here is that it is less crisp. I would have chose the Liege variant instead as the Brussels waffles, because of its light taste, is not to my preference.
DSCF2725Banana Rumba

With the unique type of waffles that they are serving, and its proximity to the Dhoby Ghaut / Bencoolen area, this place has a great potential for more customers to drop by as visitor flow to PoMo increases.

Food: 7.6/10 (great variety and taste of waffles)
Ambience: 7.3/10 (simple; rather dimly lit)
Comfort: 7.0/10 (small space; cramped seating)
Service: 7.4/10 (good service)

Dutch Colony Coffee Co. – The Grandstand

16/5/2014 – It has been since some time ago that I had wanted to go to Dutch Colony Coffee Co. because it serves as a roaster, a supplier and a coffee stall at the same time. Than to wait and visit a place that serves its blends, why not visit the source of the coffee?

Besides selling coffee drinks, they also sell different coffee beans and blends, as well as pies and cakes supplied from Windowsill Pies.

The Latte ($4.50) tasted strong and firm and is definitely pleasing to those who prefers coffee with low acidity.

Located within PasarBella of the Grandstand, this may be a inaccessible place to come to so if you are around the Bukit Timah area, this place is just nearby!

Food: 7.6/10 (great coffee)

Kin Kin Chilli Pan Mee – 534 MacPherson Road

14/5/2014 – Recently opening their Singapore branch with much hype 2 months ago (to the extent of having to queue up to 2-3 hours just for the food on their first few days), Restoran Kin Kin is a popular restaurant in KL specializing in their chilli pan mee.

Besides having the original pan mee and other types of you mian, they also have soups.

The Signature Dry Chilli Pan Mee ($5) looks like an ordinary dry ban mian when it was served out, but after mixing the chilli paste that is provided on the table, it’s not hard to see why this is one of the favourites here. The chilli, while not being overly spicy, brought out the flavour in the ban mian after mixing the minced meat, ikan bilis, poached egg, fried onions and meatballs. It tasted like a dry ramen you can get in a Japanese restaurant, except that this is more flavourful, more filling, less dry and definitely more spicier (but less spicier than other types of noodles).

IMG_1207Signature Dry Chilli Pan Mee

The chilli that is responsible for the great tasting pan mee.

As the hype for this place becomes more manageable, it is now easier to have a meal here (be it for lunch or for dinner, dine-in or takeaway). Given that this place is around the MacPherson / Tai Seng area, this place will be filled with the lunch crowd!

Food: 7.6/10 (great pan mee)
Ambience: 7.1/10 (simply decorated)
Comfort: 7.3/10 (ample seating)
Service: 7.4/10 (good service)

Brownice – Sin Ming Centre

28/4/2014 – The Upper Thomson area has enjoyed popularity for offering different F&B choices. Ice cream parlours are no strangers here, with Salted Caramel, Udders, NeLi and Scoopz within the shophouses. One of the earliest tenants of the area, Brownice, is located further inwards, within Sin Ming Centre, which specializes in ice cream made from all natural, egg-free and non-dairy products.

Satisfying my waffle cravings, I ordered the Waffles with Peanut Butter Chocolate ($7.30; $3.80 for waffles, $3.50 for 1 scoop). The waffles is crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. The Peanut Butter Chocolate accompanying it, while trying to strike a balance between both flavours, tasted more chocolatey than the peanut butter taste.

Anyone can enjoy the ice cream here without feeling guilty due to the nature of the contents. If you are around the Sin Ming / Upper Thomson area, this is one spot that should not be missed.

Food: 7.5/10 (great waffles and ice cream)

Bloomsbury Bakers – Block 30 Bendemeer Road

15/4/2014 – Two classmates, Ng Hui Yi and Ann Chong studied at Le Cordon Bleu in London, which is located in Bloomsbury Square. That is how the name of the shop, Bloomsbury Bakers, came about. Situated in Bendemeer, this place is only a 5 minute walk away from Boon Keng MRT.

The menu here is simple. Cakes are their specialty here, with a small selection of drinks.

The Lychee Martini Cake ($7) are not for the faint-hearted here as it tasted rather heavy and the lychee bits between the layers of the lychee cake is covered in martini. When compared to Pine Garden’s Cake (the only other place to serve Lychee Martini Cake), Pine Garden’s will fare better as it is more wallet-friendly and the taste of the martini is more distinct and even throughout the lychee bits.
IMG_0825Lychee Martini Cake

Despite being located in a relatively aged estate, it is able to even attract aged people as there are old people patronizing the shop every now and then. If you are around the Bendemeer / Boon Keng area, this place is also a quiet area to visit and relax.

Food: 7.5/10 (great cakes)
Ambience: 7.6/10 (simplistic; feels out-of-town)

Three Hands Coffee – 17 Binjai Park

17/4/2014 – Located within the quiet estate of Binjai Park in Bukit Timah lies 2 rows of shophouses that seemed self-sufficient for the residents there, ranging from F&B establishments to clothings to even furnishings. What seems to be Taberna Wine Academy that is usually closed in the day has since houses yet another cafe that is much like One Man Coffee in Thomson, which only operates in the day.

The drinks menu. There is also a limited selection of pastries and cakes.

The Terra Firma blend from Papa Palheta is used for the coffees here. The Flat White ($5.50) tasted strong, while maintaining the milkiness without being too overpowering.
IMG_0869Flat White

This quiet estate enjoys a great selection of shops, be it food-related or not. With the addition of this place (although not permanently as this is only a temporary location until they find a place to relocate to), there is now yet another place to choose from for dining or just to relax in the afternoons! If you are around the Bukit Timah area, give this place a try!

Percolate – Block 136 Bedok North Ave 3

16/4/2014 – Opened about a few weeks back by a barista who worked previously in Loysel’s Toy, Percolate has already gained a name for itself. Selling sandwiches, cakes and coffee, this place is flooded with people during the weekends (which is why I chose to go there on a weekday!)

It is interesting to note that the bakes and drinks here comes from various sources. The bakes and cakes here comes from Cakestand, a bakery located at Katong Shopping Centre that also operates an online order system. The pastries are from French bakery BAO. The tea comes from local tea company Amuse Projects, and the coffee? Papa Palheta’s Terra Firma blend (of course!)

The drinks and sandwich menu is rather simple.

There is a high tea set which cost $8.50, consisting of any cakes + coffee/tea. The Chocolate Cake ($6) here feels firm and tasted great. Chocolate lovers will definitely like this.
IMG_0837Chocolate Cake

The 5oz White ($4) tasted strong and smooth, but may not suit those who don’t want their coffee to taste too acidic as this one can be slightly stronger.
IMG_08385oz White

Given their location (near the Bedok Town Centre), it is easy to visit the place especially since other cafes around Bedok are further inwards in Fengshan and doesn’t really specialize in coffee.

Food: 7.7/10 (great cake and coffee)
Ambience: 7.5/10 (simplistic)

The Cereal Pantry – Block 45 Telok Blangah Drive

4/4/2014 – The Cereal Pantry opened recently at Telok Blangah, within walking distance from The Marshmallow Tree, but instead of having the usual fares like macarons or cakes, they sell cereals here.

The cereal menu is imprinted on the wall.

Get the Double Crunch with Waffle Crisp, Honey Crunch Corn Flakes ($3, double scoop), Mini Marshmallows ($0.95) and Fresh Milk ($1.50), which is a sweeter combination.
IMG_0741Double Crunch with Waffle Crisp, Honey Crunch Corn Flakes, Mini Marshmallows and Fresh Milk

The Iced Latte ($4.80) isn’t your usual cup of coffee. It comes in the form of coffee ice cubes, which you have to stir it with the milk provided. This tasted strong even when the milk is added in, which will also pacify those who wants low acidity in their coffee.
IMG_0744Iced Latte

Although the food concept here is rather unique for a cafe, cereal is something that can be easily bought and whipped up at home and will probably serve better for those who doesn’t have the time to do so. The drinks here says otherwise though, but is definitely not their niche here. If you are around Telok Blangah area, do give this a place a try still!

2 Loaves Bakery – Block 46-3 Commonwealth Drive

4/4/2014 – While being in the vicinity of Tanglin Halt, I decided to visit 2 Loaves Bakery that has just opened its door 3 days ago! The owner, Sherlyn Kon, used to run an online baking shop until she found out that the former bakery that occupies the space has decided to close down, and she took over the space!

Their hot selling item here is the Banana Loaf ($5.80), which tasted sweet and moist. The generous amount of bananas used also made it taste rich in flavour.

I also got to try the Cinnamon Bun that came out fresh from the oven. It is evenly spiced with cinnamon, giving it a fresh fragrance of cinnamon and sweetness with every bite.

This place also serves other kind of cakes like S’Mores Loaf and Valrhona Chocolate Loaf, cookies like The In-between and even jam spreads. If you are around the Commonwealth / Queenstown area, do give this place a visit!

Food: 7.7/10 (great buns and cakes)

MollyCoddle Dessert Cafe – Block 354 Clementi Ave 2

Note: This place is now closed.

18/2/2014 – Located within Clementi Avenue 2 Shopping Centre, which is rather inaccessible by itself, MollyCoddle Dessert Cafe might be very hard to find as it is well-hidden near the corner.

The menu in overall is displayed on top of the counter.

The gelato menu, that consists of mainly gelato toasts, also acts as an order chit.

There is a special promotion. For Honey Toast (that comes with the Simply Vanilla Gelato) and any choice of drinks, it cost $10.

Their house blend comes from Highlander Cofffee. I chose the Cafe Latte ($4.80), which tasted rather strong.
IMG_2586Cafe Latte

The Honey Toast with Simply Vanilla Gelato ($7.80) is their highlight item here. It is topped with whipped cream and cherry and layered with honey. The toast is crisp on the outside, soft and well buttered on the inside. This is well accompanied by the gelato, which enhances the sweetness of the toast.
IMG_2589Honey Toast with Simply Vanilla Gelato

This place deviates from the norm, that usually sells waffles. The gelato toast is something that you should try to see which one you prefer more. If you are around the Clementi area, this place is one to be considered as an ideal dessert place.

Note: This place is now closed. They also have a new outlet at Block 30 Kelantan Rd #01-99, so do give that outlet or this one a try!

Nylon Coffee Roasters – Block 4 Everton Park

16/3/2014 – As one of the earliest coffee joints to surface, Nylon Coffee Roasters is also one of the earliest cafes to set up within Everton Park. With limited seating space when they started out, they have since expanded to include a big communal table and a few more seats.

Their research laboratory where they experiment with different coffee beans!

The 6oz White Coffee ($4.50) is made using their own Four Chairs blend, that provides a creamy and balanced taste. The coffee tasted milky, while still maintaining the strong taste.

Revolution Coffee – Infinite Studios

29/3/2014 – Revolution Coffee is a cafe that opened last year, selling the usual brunch items. The location? Infinite Studios. This is part of the still developing Mediapolis that will start to take shape sometime next year

The main menu consisting of all-day breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, pastas, side dishes, desserts and drinks!

And the brunch menu

The Sticky Date Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream and Gula Melaka ($9.90), though pricey, but is otherwise great. The pudding is soft and moist and accompanies well with the gula melaka sauce, which tasted very rich on coconut and pandan. The same can’t be said for the ice cream, though the mild tasting vanilla flavour is better as it did not hinder the taste of the gula melaka.

The coffees here uses blends from different coffee roasters, the most common being the Orange Chocolate blend from Smitten Coffee. The Cafe Latte ($5.50), made from the Reservoir Road blend from Single Origin Roasters in Sydney, Australia, tasted full-bodied and creamy.

This place will still be rather inaccessible and secluded until Mediapolis develops around next year but it is sure to attract the crowd by then! If you are around the one-north area, this is the place to get a quiet respite.

Mamak Culture – Toa Payoh HDB Hub

28/3/2014 – Gurney Drive, famed for their Penang street food, has started a new concept titled Mamak Culture a few months ago in the new wing of Toa Payoh HDB Hub, which specializes in Malay and Indian cuisine.

As of now, they only have roti canai, briyani and some side dishes in their menu, as well as local drinks.

Get local drinks such as the Teh Tarik ($1.90), Teh Halia ($2.20), Kopi Tarik ($1.90) and Milo Dinosaur ($3.50)
IMG_0694Teh Tarik

IMG_0696Kopi Tarik

IMG_0697Milo Dinosaur

The Nasi Briyani with Mamak Fried Chicken ($8.90, with choice of Teh/Kopi Tarik; $7.50, a-la-carte) tasted rather ok. The briyani rice tasted ok and the fried chicken is great (tender on the inside) but the pappadum that comes with it is not crisp and might have been left out in the open for too long.
IMG_0698Nasi Briyani with Mamak Fried Chicken

The Roti Egg (top) ($2.30) is soft to tear off and the egg seems to spread evenly on the roti canai. The Roti Onion (bottom) ($2) is less plausible though, as there was huge chunks of onion that wasn’t spread out evenly. Best to accompany them with the curry sauce.
IMG_0699Roti Egg & Roti Onion

Get the Roti Plain ($4.20, 2 pieces and with choice of Teh/Kopi Tarik; $1.30 per piece, minimum 2 pieces) if you want it original.

The food may be priced slightly higher than other restaurants of its type, but it is nonetheless an inexpensive option to choose from if you are around the Toa Payoh area.

Food: 7.5/10 (great drinks and coffee)
Ambience: 7.2/10 (simplistic; rather dim)
Comfort: 7.3/10 (ample seating but rather cramped)
